The Basics

  • What Is Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine has 4 main components: acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy, and Tul-na (medical manipulation).  Acupuncture usually involves the Insertion of sterile needles Into specific points on the body in order to cause a therapeutic effect.

  • Is there scientific evidence on how it works?

Yes! There is a great deal of research showing that acupoints are located in the areas where there is a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, small arterioles, and lymphatic vessels.

Research has repeatedly shown that stimulation of these acupoints releases beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters.

In short, acupuncture is a drug free form of pain relief and healing!

  • What is Qi?

Qi (pronounced “chee”) is life force or vital energy. There are two contrasting forms: Yin and Yang. Qi moves through the body and maintains the balance of Yin and Yang.

When Qi is interrupted, pain and disease occurs. Acupuncture stimulation restores the flow of Qi and enables the body to heal itself.

  • What is a channel or meridian?

A channel or meridian is where the Qi flows inside of the body.

In animals, there are 12 regular channels and 8 extraordinary channels. Common acupoints are located along these channels.

  • Is acupuncture safe?

YES! Acupuncture is a very safe medical procedure.

  • How long does each treatment take?

Each session lasts 20-45 minutes. The first session takes longer so that Dr. Kally can get to know your animal and their needs.

  • How soon can we expect results?

Some results can be seen immediately, but others require several treatments. Generally, a minimum of 3 to 5 treatments for chronic conditions are needed before you can expect notable improvement.

  • Does it hurt?

Rarely! Acupuncture is not painful and over 95% of patients are comfortable during treatment.
